Sand Art Candle Holders

Many of us have made sand art as children by layering colorful sand in containers. Make colorful sand art candle holders as creative and unique centerpieces for your table. The first thing you will need to make these sand art votive holders is a clear container. You can choose to recycle old glass jars, used test tubes, wine glasses or even empty soda bottles to give your work the look of found art.

Colored sand is available at craft stores or you can easily make it yourself too. To make colored sand, add some powdered tempera paint or colored chalk to the sand and mix the two together. Experiment with different amounts of paint and sand to make the colors dark or light. Activate the paint, by adding a few drops of water to the paint-sand mixture and blend well. Let the sand dry thoroughly before using it.

Start decorating the container by using a funnel to pour in some sand to create a layer inside it. Create layers of different colors, you may tilt the container to fill the sand at a diagonal or use a wooden dowel to press the sand down in some places before pouring in another color to enhance the visual appeal.

Choose colors that blend with the other elements of your table decor or use holiday colors if you are decorating for a holiday. Add a spark with layers of glitter dust or create visual interest with a layer or two of buttons, pearls or even dried botanicals. Set a votive candle on top to complete these unique candle holders.

Sweet Treat Dinnerware

Create unique sugar-stamped dinnerware to add style to your table. To make this stylish dinnerware, mix together food coloring in the color of your choice and powdered sugar to make a smooth, even paste. Use a rubber stamp in a motif that highlights your theme and dip it in the sugar paste, then press onto your plates and the edges of your bowls to make a sugared impression. This idea works wonderfully well on solid-colored or clear glass plates and bowls.

Put together an eye-catching table setting with these simple ideas.
